I tell the students all the time to write down what they are doing.
Write it down I say as I work with them or pass by them in the glaze room.
Because, you will not remember what you did.
A few weeks back or more Mark sold one of my tiles with the possibility of doing more for a bathroom. Cool, I said, which one I said?, and he showed me a picture, hummm, okay.
Yes, they wanted more. I went to my notebook to see my notes.....
I have this one, I have that one, I wrote down that one.
No notes on this tile- none at all.
I went for the picture that Mark took and it looked very blue.
I started testing by the picture and going more blue and more blue and in the wrong direction.
Time to try something else.
I had them send me the tile.
OH!
Okay!
Now, we can get this party started!
Write it down, even if you are just playing with glazes and stains.....

They look great. I have not developed the habit of consistent note taking and sometimes have reason to regret that lack.
ReplyDeleteI am so bad about notes, I began just making test tiles for everything as notes instead…but that assumes I can look at the tile and know what I did ;)
ReplyDeleteHa Gary, I do use a marker to write on the back of test after they come out. Then I have to figure out my short hand.
ReplyDeleteTruer words were never spoke! I am now trying to include as much info as I can on the test itself. I am staring at some old stain color mix tests....good luck with that.....my notes are gone!
