Congrats on your new kiln! Do you have any estimate on how much you pay in electricity for one firing? I fired my new kiln twice in January and our electric bill went waaaaayyyy up - but I am not sure if it is because of that? Just trying to get an idea of what it might cost - hopefully not $200 per firing??
Congrats! I just bought a tiny LL jdh the one designed for crystalline. It has 4 elements in each zone that are so fat they barely fit in the grooves. rated to cone 12. I will only fire 6. This thing will last forever. It is only 2 cubic ft tho. But i love it. have fun!
200 to fire seems very very high! I don't think it comes any where near this we average close to 100.00 a month when we are firing the electric kilns and closer to -80 when we are not.
Oooo pretty new kiln. Look at it just calling to start firing all your beauties! I LOVE the tiles -how fun and those glazes are great.
Sounds like Mel has an electrical issue -first thing I'd check is the Hot Water Heater. We had that happen on a rental... Even using my kilns, welder and plasma cutter with 220 int he shop doesn't cost that much.
I really want to make tiles! Yours are terrific. In my studio the sheetrock is up and being taped, HVAC and final electric is tomorrow. Time to call for the kiln to be delivered!! I was glad to see the question re: firing cost.
This is a formula my engineer brother gave me to give me a rough idea of kiln firing cost:
Voltage x Amps = Watts
Watts divided by 1000= Kilowatt
Kilowatt x Hours Run = Kilowatt Hours.
Look at your electric bill; figure the cost of one Kilowatt Hour; multiply by Kilowatt Hours and you will get a rough idea of the cost of a firing. I find it is close enough to give me a pretty good idea of what my electric bill will be.

They do look happy together, they just want to be warmed up now, ha.
So shiny and new! I was thinking last night that I would like a nice simple electric kiln, sigh... one day!

i thought so... will have to look into this. thanks so much for answering!
oh- we do have a separate building from the house- but the house is always higher then our work building.
Cost most when we are running the A/C
