Hanging out in the hood

Last night I took a ride down to Starworks to sit in on the slide show by glass artist Robin Cass.
I found her work to be very intriguing.
I enjoyed the way her work had developed over the years and really fell in love with her large wall pieces she is making.
I wanted to scale them down and wear them.
Here is a link to her work - go take a gander.

Mark and I rode back over today to watch the work in progress.
What is it about watching an artist, any artist work that is so fascinating?
Watching the rhythm of the team is amazing with glass folks.
They really pull for one another and give their all to make it all work together.

After leaving there we took a quick ride to see David Stuempfle's new kiln.

The kiln is just a work of art.
They will start some heat tonight....

This all made me think that there are days we are hanging out making art back here in the back woods of NC and that is our hood.
So just us hanging in the hood.
Cheers,
M

When I was at Penland I would end up at the dinner table with the glass artists so one day I took a break and went up to the glass studio. they were having way too much fun. What a fascinating thing to watch. You got a nice 'hood down there :) looks like a nice way to take advantage of this beautiful day. I made bowls and barns and fired a bisque...

That is one very neat and clean anagama. It needs a little roughing up by the fire. Which it sounds like it's about to get.

The glass fascinates me looking at the flames and what they can do and I'm with Hollis that is a very neat and clean kiln.

I think glass and clay go together, something about the heat bond and fire and shape! That kiln is AMAZING! I would love to get in on building one of those sometime....on someone else's property of course, my neighbors would FREAK!

I love watching what you are up to!

what a beautiful kiln, it looks like a big sculpture. i bet they're having fun out there stoking and probably drinking a few too. we have a couple glass places in town. i could sit and watch for hours (if i had hours). whenever i do watch, i keep wondering about the pecking order of the team and on the lookout for attitude but mostly it's not there, they're just having a good time.

jeff and i went to see the Chihuly exhibit in Tampa, FL this week... glass really isn't my thing but seeing his work in person was amazing and thought provoking.
upon our return to Seagrove i realized that everyday i am thankful to be a part of the "hood" in North Carolina.
