Gary- DON"T LOOK!

Thanks for the birthday wishes for Mark.
He had a nice birthday with visits  from my sister and her husband and a week-end visit with our son and his wife.
Mark was able to spend some father/son time out on the pond.
The report was many fish were caught.
And even though there was no pie- he ate his share of brownies!
But since the word is out I guess there will be a pie one day soon.
Now who is coming over to have a slice?

While sitting outside and taking in the most wonderful, sunny first day of spring my BIL, John, spotted our first crawling visitor. This black snake was out sunning himself in the boxwood bushes.
Of course Mark and I ran for camers.
He was not happy to have us right there and the tounge would flick out very often.
I tried to get a shot of that flicking tounge and he would pull it in just as I would shot!
He finally got tired of our company and took off.
Which was good because my sister was coming out and she is not a fan of snakes.
I don't mind them as long as they live outside and don't come in to see us..........

One more kiln to fire tomorrow and the packing starts for our treck off to The Catawba Valley Festival in Hickory NC.

GOOD GOD I COULD NEVER LIVE in the south. That is so horribly frightening.
I remember moving to this house in NY 4 years ago and clipping the grass in April and coming nose to nose with a huge spotted snake--a milk snake. I took a rake and gently carried him away to a place far from my house. They are harmless, but BLEH!
I hear you have snakes that are NOT harmless.....

Happy birthday to Mark & what a wonderful way to spend it -- with family - in the warm spring sunshine.

Great pictures of that snake. Living in Florida - we would get snakes inside, in our pool, in our mailbox -- I never became a fan - but did become less afraid.

You guys didn't fool me. I figured out you had been looking at a snake on the ride home and John confirmed it. Thanks for trying to shield my sensitive eyes. Bottom line is I don't like them, but they seem to find me. It was only out in those bushes because it sensed I was around.

That sucker looks HUGE!

Not huge but definitly full grown. Maybe four feet. The kind that needs a two mouse meal. I think it's the same one I've been trying to move a little farther from the house for the past couple of years.

ah, the lovely black snake. it's great that he stuck his head up like a cobra... maybe posing for a shot or two. i remember when i first moved here after college and moved in with 2 friends at a country house (loved that house). out back was a cow pasture and a tiny rustic shack with room for about 2 cows in it. we went out there exploring one day and went in the shack and were talking. suddenly i turned around and there was a huge black snake, probably 6 feet long and as big around as an orange in the middle. we didn't run or anything but we very startled.

The snake's cool, but the brownies are better. They'll definitely take the place of pie.

First day of spring and I have four to six inches of snow in Dallas while others are enjoying the sun. What's up with that?lol

I had a relative, who lived in the country, take a pot out of the cabinet and take off the lid only to be staring at a coiled rattlesnake. She didn't get bit, but it was certainly unsettling for her to say the least.

AAAAAAAAAACCCCCCKKKKK! Another reason to live in Alaska, we have NO SNAKES!! I would have peed my pants -I am soooo not used to slithery critters. We don't even have lizards or fleas -the deep freeze is good for something after all -ha!

I'm with you, Meredith. Gotten fairly used to the snakes, living around here. And, um, what kind of pie are we talking about :o)

What a cool snake photo. We have a snake like this that hangs around all summer but the only bad thing is that he ends up getting our baby birds and that's just not cool. Hope to see ya'll at the CVS and good luck with your firings this spring.
